What is beef jerky?

Beef jerky is a type of meat preservation in which fresh meat is dried to prevent it from spoiling.

The word "jerky" came from a tribe in South America known as the "koachua" - as early as 1550 the natives of the tribe called the dried meat "charki", which means to burn. The Quechua tribe used meat from alpacas and die dried in the sun or over an open fire.

Over the years, people have discovered that meat can be made softer and tastier by adding different spices, and jerky has become a delicacy.

Dried meat is also known in South Africa as biltong. Biltong is common in the south of the continent and is usually eaten as a snack, but can also be used in stews, added to muffins or bread pots and more.

Different flavors, styles and types of meats have evolved and now it is one of the leading snacks in the world.

Beef jerky and biltong are considered a healthy snack low in fat and calories, and have a minimum of carbohydrates per serving

This is the perfect snack for a munch, goes well with alcohol, hiking and camping ..
